FUEL DELIVERY/BACKFIRE/UNKNOWN Sign In

Hello. Fuel problem:1995 CHEVY SUBURBAN K1500 4X4 255K, 350 CI, EVERYTHING RUNS AND WORKS FINE BUT THIS occurred in last 3 months. happens ONLY when it is hot outside. Does not happen at night, in rain or on cool days. IT WILL BACKFIRE, LOSE POWER, SLOWLY NOT BE ABLE TO GO ANYMORE. never dies. have to pull over. sit for couple minutes, then good to go for a few miles. backfires, loses power and stalls. GM dealership said fuel pump was culprit. TANK WAS DROPPED, CLEANED, AND NEW OEM PUMP INSTALLED. NEW HOSES AND FUEL LINES. NEW FUEL PUMP RELAY. ELECTRICAL RENEWED. NOTHING WAS LEFT TO CHANCE. put back together, fired up on first try. no leaks. all good. drove it to operating temp with strained fresh gas and same thing happened. r&r fuel pump again. same thing. I drove this cross country, 18 mpg, pulling a uhaul and it ran like a champ. till it gets hot air. It does not overheat. It is not vapor lock and it never happened last summer, or the early hot days of this year. 255k 350ci, auto 4x4. well maintained, tuned, no codes, nothing. ONLY THING IS THE HOT DAYS IT CUTS OUT, BACKFIRES AND STALLS.on flat land or in the mountains, with or without a load, hot days kill this beast. ASE AND MASTER MECH'S HAVE DUPLICATED THE PROBLEM BY DRIVING IT, YET HAVE NOT A CLUE...But are glad to cash my check and shrug. I hope someone can solve this issue or give me insight.

thanks Terry
Please hurry if you have any feedback. I am at my wit's end and money..

Re: FUEL DELIVERY/BACKFIRE/UNKNOWN Sign In

Backfiring is usually caused by a timing problem in the ignition system. Sounds like an electrical component such as an ignition module, coil, or stator is getting hot and failing.

Those are kind of hard to diagnose. You can use a heat gun to simulate the conditions and maybe get it to act up. You don't want to overheat anything with the gun or you'll definitely have another problem added onto the one you have.

Sometimes you have to hook up things like a scope to the coil primary and watch what is going on when the thing flakes out. Not a lot of people have one of those laying around or know how to use them though.

THANKS SEEMS VIABLE TO BE A PROBLEM. COIL AND MODULE ISN'T TOO EXPENSIVE JUST TO REPLACE AND SEE IF THAT CURES IT SEEMS MOST PROMISING TO START

Depending on what the distibutor looks like on the inside, if you do decide to replace the module, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the distributor. You can buy a reman distributor with the stator and module already on it. With 225K, I am sure the distributor is probably worn out.
