Hi Guys,
My check engine light went on in my 99 Ford Contour SE. Had a mechanic check the computer and codes read P0171 System Too lean (Bank 1) and P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2). I was given several possibilities for the cause and was told to bring it back for further evaluation if the check engine light comes on again. A friend suggested that I might need a new exhaust system. I have 2 questions: can anyone explain to me in simple terms what these codes mean and what the worst case scenario is in terms of repair? Also, how much should it cost to have an independent repair shop replace the exhaust system? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

With the codes you have and the age of the car it is possibly a vacume leak or a dirty MAP sensor.
Is it the v6 engine or the 4 cyclinder?
Does the car lack power on accell?
What did the repair shop do when they pulled the codes?
