Exhaust Trouble, please help!!

I have had to replace the whole exhaust system on a citroen saxo (2000 reg 1.1l engine), after getting a new cat down pipe, middle pipe, and back box, and putting them all onto the car, i found that the gap for the down pipe and the middle pipe was about 3-4 inches! is it meant to be this big, and can someone explain to me how the spring clip works,
i am very grateful for your help,

Sorry I haven’t seen a Citroen since the last time I was in Europe so I won’t be of much help with this one. Anyone else?
