Excessive Oil Burning. Please Help Sign In

Hi All,

I just bought a 2002 Nissan Terrano 2.7 TD with 104,000 miles on the clock. I noticed that it was using oil, but no visible leaks, so took it for a service. They changed the filters and put 8 liters of oil in her.
200 miles later, the oil light was on. So, the car is burning approximately 1 liter or oil every 25 miles!

I've spoken to people about it but I'm getting mixed opinions. What do you think's wrong with it?

Is it likely to be the 'valve stem oil seals'? There's not a lot of smoke, just a very small amount of smoke when I start her up for a few seconds, then it's clean. So, nothing to suggest the 'valve stem oil seals'? I was told if it was the 'valve stem oil seals' then it'd be smoking really bad?

Is it then likely to be the 'turbo charger'? Again, just a small amount of smoke when you start her up, but I was told if the turbo was burning out this amount of oil then the exhaust pipe would be dripping out oil? I put my finger in the exhaust tail pipe when the engine was idling and it's very black surface soot, but zero signs of oil.

Is it likely to be a PCV (positive crankshaft ventilation) problem, or a blocked intake manifold? I don't know how to check for this, but was told it's a possibility? When she was in for a service, the oil and air filters were absolutely filthy, but I don't think they'd have looked at the PCV or manifold?

The other option is that the engine is just worn out and the thing would need re-bored and re-conditioned?

Any opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't afford major repair costs as I'm pretty skint so any help is truly appreciated.

David.
