[:/] In May of 2007 I had extensive work done on a 5.9l Diesel Turbo 12 Valve engine...
Reseal Vacuum Pump
Install Boost, pyrometer and Trans Temp gauges
Installed Fuel Plate
Installed Fuel Injectors
Cool air Induction
Replace Torq Converter, Valve Body, DD Trans Pan
Installed Extra Deep Trans Pan
Replaced Turbo
Extra Exhaust Pipes.
Cost $5,500.00
Today, after taking it back to them with a noise 'down low in the engine' I am being told the Main bearings are out and the entire lower engine needs to be replaced. Cost Estimate: $7000+
My question is this: When all the the work in May, should they have known, checked, heard or looked to even see if the engine was in good working order before doing all the upgrades and repairs?

This is a hard question to answer. But being honest, from May 07 till now is a long time. Also from the repairs you had them complete, I see nothing that would stand out to indicate an internal engine problem. I am sorry to say, but I have to side with the shop on this one. They are not required to check out the entire vehicle to repair the things you wanted done. Also, they could have done everything possible and the engine showed up as mechanically sound. Trying to diagnose an internal engine failure about 9 months in advance is almost impossible. Sorry, but that is my opinion and my opinion only. Wish I could offer better to you.

I am sorry the timing is so bad..anytime you gotta drop $7k+ is a bad time. When a vehicle is sent it to be fixed or upgraded, mechanics and techs do just that. It's only in services or pre-existing problems where they are expected or asked to look at things, do they pick it up. Sometimes you may luck out and when they are doing the test drive, they pick something up, analyse and contact you about it. I am sorry
