Engine stalling Sign In

1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L I-6

The engine is shutting off when I take my foot off of the gas at significant RPMs. The oil light comes on as it dies.

It makes no sound or anything it just simply shuts off.

It has been a little slower to crank lately but not much and it always fires up, don't know if that would be related. Also, a belt has been squeaking whenever I turn on the air or heat.

Any ideas? Is anything related.

Thanks

Re: Engine stalling Sign In

?? Belt not tight enough? Some cars are very fussy about correct voltage and state of battery which would be compremised with a loose belt and alternator not always maintaining constant power and is probably the noise when it has the load of running the blower.

Belt condition and tension known good, alternator performace and battery checked should be first on the list and may correct the stalling. Oil light coming on is normal with a stalled engine - not really if before stalling with key on still,
