Hello,

I read you can buy a code reader so that is what I will do but for now I have a couple general questions on what may be the problem.

I drive a 99 Suzuki Grand Vitara- automatic transmission.

At first my car would have a hard time shifting to 2nd gear. It would stall and then finally after a few seconds it shifted to 2nd gear. When I was driving again back home, it didn't even go above 15 mph. I assumed this was a transmission problem. When I got back, I tried starting the car up again - it was running but shook violently and was making strange noises and then finally died.

I was told if the car was shaking and making noises, it was most likely engine trouble. It was dark when this happened so I was not able to check everything.
What i do know is the battery is fine because I do get power from the radio and lights when I try to turn the car on.

Could a broken belt, fuses, or low transmission fluid cause all this?

If the engine isn't running well the trans won't know what to do for you. If this came on all of a sudden like it sounds, rule out common vacuum leaks, and all high voltage components (secondaries) that provide spark to the plugs and the plugs themselves,

I'm just guessing, but it still sounds like a trans problem.
At first it sounded like all the teeth on the "bell" gear are gone. If all the shaking and noise came after you tried to put it in gear, then it's the trans.
One of the clutches is worn out.
If the shaking came from just the engine in park, then I have no guess.
