Engine loosing power while driving Sign In

Year:1990
Make:Toyota
Model:Corolla DLX (4A-FE)
Engine Size:1.6L fuel injected
Mileage:130,000

Hi all and thanks in advance for your help!

My old Corolla started to loose power while driving. When care is idling there is no problem. Each time i try to drive it it runs fine for the first 100 yards and then, as it increases the speed power drops instantly and car runs just like it is in N(neutral) instead of D(drive). This looks like a chocking, cars tries to recover, then chocks again.

I started a bit of troubleshooting on my own. First I thought it is the acceleration cable, maybe it slips somehow. There were some loose bolts there but it was not the acceleration cable because I left the car in N with engine running and I manually accelerated using the round shaped part where the cable connects to on engine side and still the problem existed, so apparently it is not the cable/pedal. Then I thought it may be the fuel filter (impurities) so I replaced it with a new one - still same thing.

My question to you is: what can I do next? Check injectors, fuel pump, vacuum hoses? How can I check these? Is there any air valve that I can check? Is there any water in my gas and is there a way to check it?

Thanks a lot!

Have you checked the timing marks on the timing belt?

I checked them about a few months ago when I changed the timing belt. Do you think something may have shifted in the mean while?
If so a simple compression test would tell, right?

It would give you a good idea. Since it still runs, you would be looking for small compression issues. It would be best to actually look at the marks because you are likely looking for one tooth off.
