Engine cutting out....... Sign In

I have a 1993 Chrylser New Yorker, 6 cyl. I thought it had a transmission problem, that's what the wife kept telling me. I was riding in the car yesterday and the problem began acting up, this was the first time I have been in this car when this problem was happening, it sounds like a fuel problem, not the transmission. You'll be driving along at 55 mph and the car will start slowing up, the motor RPM's start dropping. The motor will seem to cut out then run again, rev up, then drop, it's just like it's running out of gas. If you pull over and shut the car off, then turn it back on, sometimes this will correct the problem, sometimes it takes 3-4 times. Any ideas?

I had a 1990 Plymouth Acclaim with the 2.5ltr 4 cyl engine. It quit while I was driving 55mph; it was ten years ago now but I think it did not sputter like yours; I think it was a drop-off-the-cliff shut off. However, for what it is worth, mine was a "pick up plate"--an adjunct to the distributor that helps supply the power for the sparks. The problem was very intermitant--all of a sudden power was gone and the engine shut off. The part was very easy to change and was less than $50.

If that is not it, you could go the fuel route--filter, check fuel pressure (fuel pump), fuel injectors...so many possibilities there.

Good luck.

I was reading about your problem. Did you ever find out what it was exactly? I am having the same issues with my 07 saturn vue and the dealership can't "replicate" the problem, so they say there isn't anything wrong. Any info would be helpful! Thanks
