Engine cranks but car would not start, what could be the problem? Sign In

Hello folks, I have a 1995 Toyota Cameron (2.2L, Automatic). The car was running fine. Today, I shut off the car for 5 minutes, then it would not start (although the engine cranks).

I checked fuel pump, distributor, fuses, and relays. All fuses and relays are okay. I replaced fuel pump, ignition module and distributor (I made sure that they are not defective), but it still did not have power at the distributor and ignition wires. I noticed that the battery indicator light was off, however, all the other lights at the dash were on.

My question is, why would it still not start? Could it be the computer?

Thanks in advance for your time.

James

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Sorry, I think my question was too general.

First of, I checked, and there is no power at fuel pump nor the distributor-wire when the ignition key is switched on.

1) Checked, there is no spark at the plug. (Well, if the coil has no fire, then the spark plug will not have fire.)

2) I will try that tomorrow, thanks.

3) I think, if there is no fire at fuel pump, then there is no need to check for fuel pressure, right?

4) I will check #2 first

Don't skip any steps or assume anything.

I don't think I'm assuming anything. I put my finger over the plug wire and had a helper turn the key to run, and there was no spark.

What does compression have to do with spark if there is no power?
