Engine Overheating

1997; Mitsubishi Space Wagon; 2.1 GLX; 67,000 miles. Please help if possible. My car overheats and cuts out after about one and a half miles. Radiator fan doesn't kick-in at low speed or when idling, but even when I 'm travelling at, say, 40mph when the fan should not be needed the engine still overheats. No money for a mechanic at all since being made redundant. Pretty desperate. Thanks.

You might want to start looking into bicycles. At the very least, you probably have a bad radiator but at this point it's much more likely that the repeated overheating and driving it hot has now led to a blown head gasket or worse. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the reply. You think it's a write-off then? I was hoping it might just be a fuse or thermostat or something.

It never hurts to try a thermostat before condemning the engine but it's not likely to cure it all.
