Master cylinder's can fail with attempts to bleed brakes as they travel into a crusty area of the bore that hasn't been used for ages and it can wreck the master cylinder. Some brakes have different bleeding procedures especially with anti-lock brakes which I think were optional on that vehicle. Look for bleeders that aren't just at the wheels.
