Deer Anybody? Sign In

I drive a lot at night around my house and have already hit a deer and damaged one vehicle. Does anyone know of anything that's ACTUALLY effective for keeping deer away? The deer repellers just don't seem to work as is evidenced by the pieces of venison now cooking on my engine block.

Thanks

Re: Deer Anybody? Sign In

Thanks for opening that as an issue. This problem exists all over the place - populated areas included. Several folks and customers have had accidents - one hurt (customer) badly.

I see those "repellers" all the time in assorted stores. How the heck are we or anyone supposed to know for sure if they can be effective??

Noted on this so far: All collisions happened at highway speeds - night time or just after daybreak. I'm pretty sure the deer aren't thrilled with this eitherWink - I took a poll! Deer are colorblind but have excellent hearing which is why those silent noise makers are supposed to alert them but probably can't at lower speeds. I think they make a noise out of human hearing range like a "dog" whistle type thing if they do work??

Deer get fixated by headlights and freeze - think you might know that now too well. If the problem is extreme where you are and places/times you drive I'd investigate a powered device if they exist - don't know yet.

The MANY times they have (one or several) crossed my path I was going 30mph or less and they were in a hurry to get out of the way.

Vitually every possible place on sides of interstate highways near me have chain link fencing for this but that's easily violated by a tree falling unoticed for a while. Same fencing also traps them in the danger area if they do get thru!!

Hope you weren't hurt. Will be interested in what others think might help,

T
