I POSTED A COMPLETELY NEW PROBLEM WITH MY TRUCK.THE SITE DOESN'T WANT ME TO POST "NEW" PROBLEMS. I WAS TOLD THE ORIGINAL THREAD HAS BEEN "UNLOCKED". I POST HERE:

ECM DEAD??
I JUST REPLACED THE CAP & ROTOR ON A '92 DAKOTA 3.9 V-6. WHEN I WENT TO START IT...ALL I WAS HEARING WAS "CLICKING". I PULLED THE NEG. POST TO CLEAN POST-CLEANED POST. AS I WAS PUTTING THE CONNECTOR BACK ON I HEARD MORE CLICKING. I DID IT SEVERAL TIMES-ALWAYS A CLICKING. IT SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM THE RELAY BOX ON THE FENDERWELL. I CLEANED THE POSITIVE POST.

I TRIED RESTARTING. MORE LESS-NOTICEABLE CLICKING. I CHECKED THE BATT V'GE. WAS 11.5V.

I PUT THE BATT CHARGER ON IT @ 1O.OV SETTING. I LEFT IT THERE FOR ABOUT 15 MINS. I TRIED RESTARTING-NO CLICKING.

I CHECKED THE BATT V'GE=12.3. I TRIED STARTING AGAIN WITH NO CLICKING. I DID NOT EVEN HAVE ANY DASH LIGHTS THAT NORMALLY COME ON WHEN I TURN THE KEY ON.

I REMOVED THE NEG TERMINAL AGAIN TO RESET THE ECM. I DID NOT HEAR ANY CLICKING FROM THE RELAYS WHEN I RECONNECTED.

I AM GETTING A 4.83V/4.92V/5.0V SIGNAL FROM 3 SENSORS. I AM ASSUMING THE ECM IS OK & WORKING.

THE "KEY ON"/START SYSTEM SEEMS TO BE DEAD. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR TO 1) GET A SIGNAL TO RELAYS; 2) GET POWER TO THE DASH LIGHTS AT "KEY ON"; 3) GET THE STARTER TO CRANK.

THE V'GE ON BATT NOW IS 12.8V.

THANX.

Put your volt meter on the battery terminals and have someone crank the engine. What is the reading?

I THINK YOU MISSED SOMETHING IN MY POST:

I'd start off by having the battery tested by conductance or carbon piling. Make sure your terminals are clean and tight. You have to verify the battery is good before troubleshooting electrical problems.

IS THAT A TEST THAT HAS TO BE PERFORMED BY A MECHANIC OR CAN I PERFORM THAT TEST MYSELF. I HAVE A VOLT METER ONLY.

I HAVE TESTED THE RELAYS FOR V'GE.ALL HAVE 12+V'S EXCEPT THE STARTER RELAY. IT ORIGINALLY HAD 11.53-11.87V'S W/KEY IN CRANK/START MODE-NO STARTER RESPONSE-NO CLICKING FROM SOLENOID. I WENT BACK OUT TO RECHECK-SINCE LAST POST. THE RELAYS STILL HAVE 12+V'S. THE STARTER RELAY NOW SHOWS 11.17V'S IN CRANK/START MODE.

THANX

Any parts store will test your battery for free. Its a help for you and an easier sale for them.

WENT TO WAL-MART & GOT ANOTHER BATTERY. HOPE I DON'T NEED TO CHECK IT. I CHECKED THE V'GE=11.9V. IT'S ON MY CHARGER NOW.

WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP TO GET THE DEVIL TO SHOW GUAGES & CRANK?

I'VE BEEN WONDERING IF THE IG SWITCH COULD BE A CONTRIBUTOR. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM BEFORE. HAVE HAD TIMES WHEN TURNING TO START...THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. A COUPLE OF TIMES IT TOOK 4-5 TURNS OF THE KEY TO GET IT TO CRANK. COULD THIS BE AN ISSUE? OR IS IT IN WIRING HARNESS WIRE WELDS/COUPLINGS. IS THERE IN-LINE OVERLOAD FUSES THAT NEED TO BE CHECKED/CHANGED?

EVENTHOUGH I HAD V'GE @ BATTERY...I HAD NO DASH GUAGES ON "KEY ON" & NO RESPONSE FROM THE ST SOLENOID/STARTER.

RIGHT NOW...I HAVE RADIO/POWER WINDOWS/BLINKER/HEADLIGHTS/UNDERHOOD LIGHT, BUT...EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE ABSENT OF V'GE.

THANX
