Coolant level keeps dropping after running without cap Sign In

I drive a Citroen Saxo 2001 1.1 with around 70,000 on the clock.

Recently I came to check my anti freeze level and the cap was missing - I remember I topped it up a week before and I must have left the cap off.

I had been driving the car to and from work (50 miles a day) for a week and when I checked, the anti freeze reservoir was dry.

I hadn't noticed any changes in my car over that week. No noises, smells, steam, so I'm hoping it hasn't done any damage.

I took it to a garage where they topped the system up and fitted a new cap. I asked the mechanic if it was likely any damage had been done and he said probably not. Apparently I had only lost about a litre and a half out of a system that holds about six litres (that doesn't mean anything to me but I took his word)

For the last few days I've been checking my anti freeze level every day and having to top it up regularly. Used two litres of ready mixed 50/50 this week.

Does this mean I've got a leak somewhere?

Still no change in the performance.

Any help and advice appreciated.

It's possible there was some air left in the system that hadn't worked itself out yet.

I would say in the next 3 or 4 days, if you are still having to add more than a liter or two to it then you should have it checked for a coolant leak because it normally doesn't take air that long to work itself out....

Thanks, I will monitor it and seek help if it keeps disappearing.
