I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.7L, V8, 92,000 miles. Front passenger floor is soaked with an oily fluid and when running defroster a film shows up on the front window. There is also an odd smell inside the car. Coolant low warning shows often. Brought to one mechanic and was told it was probably a coolant leak and without inspecting, estimated the cost of repair between $800 - $1,000. Is this worth fixing?

That's about a certain as it gets for a leaking heater core. They are labor intensive to replace and may involve discharging A/C to do this. I don't have a labor time guide for the job which is most of the cost. Ask for quotes from reputable shops. Some plain won't take on some of this.

You can bypass the heater and you'll have no heat but the leaking will stop and potential to overheat the engine from lack of coolant will be safe again.

If warm enough now to do without heat go for the bypass if you wish to buy time. If vehicle is in good shape overall I wouldn't give up on it over this,
