Compressing Struts

I tried to change the struts in a friend's 1997 Chrysler Town and Country. The springs wouldn't compress with the tool I rented. The top "plate" that holds the spring down wouldn't budge, even when I compressed the main part of the spring, the top and bottom of it expanded even more causing the issue. I am curious to what the correct procedure is here. Did I rent the wrong type of tool or is this strut known to be difficult?
I need to know why to feel incopetent Thanks for any help.
I was told that the tool was standard.

That tool is standard for some struts... With that style Chysler, there this isn't enough coils to grab it by the top & bottom coil.... to compress it, it needs to be grabbed by the top plate & bottom coils to compress it enough to change the struts.
If you haven't got it assembled then you may need to take it to a shop to have it reassembled. If you did get it assembled then..... Good job & I'm sure it was a PITA
