Hi would be extremely grateful if someone can help with a quick clutch problem which i don't know enough about and not sure I believe what the garage are saying?

I have an old, but sturdy 1994 citroen ZX 1.9D 121,000 miles on clock - the clutch cable has snapped, was in second gear about to change to 3rd and noticed my clucth pedal had disappeared - (as the pedal was flat to the bulk head attached to zero cable).

How do i know if this occurred just from wear and tear only or it is because the clutch is getting harder to move as it is on the way out?? I'm not sure I believe what the garage are saying??

The throttle cable snapped 6 months ago, so i thought it just needs a new cable, but the garage i took it to said they will order one and fit at a cost of £90-100. However, they phoned me saying they would fit a new cable but they tried moving the clutch lever and it is rock hard so fitting a new cable will be a waste of time without replacing the clutch as well as it will snap again.

I'm confused as my clutch was not slipping or making any noise previously, I didn't think it was excessively hard either; nor did the bite point seem excessively high?? I presumed that 121,000 on the original clutch cable was good going and it just needed a new cable. Obviously its an old car and only worth £400-£500 - is it worth trying with a cable or taking the garage's word for it and scrapping it/selling it spares/repairs?

From a poor student - Big thanks to anyone who can help!!

A clutch assembly can fail at anytime; without warning and fail in a number of different ways.
Possibly when the cable broke, the clutch was allowed to aggressively engage; causing the pressure plate portion of the clutch assembly to jam? If so then yes the clutch assembly will need replacing.
How are they trying to actuate the clutch, without the cable? Without the proper leverage; any clutch will be hard to move the clutch fork (lever).
Ask them to show you that the “lever” will not move and how they tried to move it. If it’s just by hand get them to try with some form of pry bar. Some clutches will take 75 to 100 pounds of pressure to move the fork; you’re not going to do this by hand.

BIG THANKS for that - really helpful advice! Going back to the garage tomorrow - they do seem like genuine guys else I guess they would have just fitted the clutch cable and asked for my money and it would have been my problem if it snapped again. They did say due to the age of the car they are leaving it to me to decide what I want to do because any costly repairs aren't worth it. Many thanks again - really appreciate it.
