Chevy astro van stalls in gear/with brakes on... Sign In

1991 chevy astro van with a 4.3/700r4. High miles, around 180,000. When you put the car in gear with your foot on the brake it stalls. Have replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and pcv valve. Any idea what's next? Fuel pump? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Nick

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Thank you, and I'll let you know what happens - we're working on it today. That fits better than the fuel pump, since if it was the pump it seems that it'd be giving me trouble when the demand was greater, rather than when it was at minimum fuel demand (idle). Plus, the color of the plugs didn't really suggest fuel starvation. Thank you again. NvV

Worked like a charm! The throttle body was filthy, scrubbed and scrubbed until it was clean. I replaced the part, and it was filthy, too. Cleaned out the seat, checked the clearance and put it in. The idle was high, but that was fixed as per the procedure in the instructions in the box (when the vehicle goes past 40mph, the ecu extends the valve to get a reference). All of the other parts that I replaced were much needed, the van hadn't had the plugs changed in ten years (not my doing). The advice that I got here kept me from chasing my tail at all. I will be back, in addition to sending people here as the opportunity presents itself. Thanks again, Nick
