Chevy Cavalier Repair

I was told (by my mechanic) that my 2000 Chevy Cavalier (46,000 Miles) need a front steering rack & pinion repair. What can I expect to pay for this repair? (With realigned)(in Oklahoma)[email]

Guest; First question would be, what's wrong with the rack? Leaking? Hard to turn one direction when cold?
For a price guess, we'll need to know what model Cavalier (there are three models), which engine (two possibilities), and type of transmission (standard or auto.)
A guess, without that information, would be $250-$350 for a reman. rack & pinion assy. and 2.3-3.5 hrs. labor.
Of course, prices across the country will vary.

Model of my chevy cavalier: I don't know
Engine: 4 cylinder
Transmission: Auto
Problem: My mechanic said there is a lot of "play" in the steering wheel, and he told me to not take a long trip with the car untill its fixed. That scares me. I have only few miles on my chevy and take good care about it. The dealership (chevy) is lousy in this town and so I have to trust an inderpendent mechanic. It just sounded very high ( $ ) to me, and I don't know nothing about cars. His price: 672.00$

Factory OEM Steering Gear 26068964 $792.32
Labor 2.4 Does not include set toe, Most shops charge 1.0 set toe
dependent on your shops labor fees, you times 2.4 times the labor rate as this is flat rate, then the alignment is a menu item so 49.95 or whatever the rate for their alignment would be added to the total of flat rate and the part.
If the total was around 650.00 parts and labor that is reasonable.
However, with that being said, play in the wheel can also be an issue with worn tie rod ends inner or outer or ball joints, I would have all of these inspected as well as any abnormal hub play at another shop to obtain a second opinion before investing your money in a repair that may not solve your problem. Also, if the rack is being replaced due to worn inner tie rod ends and yes they would be fixed by replacing the steering gear, they are much cheaper for you the consumer, to be replaced rather than the whole steering gear. The object is not to throw the baby out with the bath water, If your gear has no leaks no binding and the pre load is fine, then the issue must be isolated and repaired.

Just to add:
Labor prices vary widely even within an area. Eastern MA can be right around $100/hr - overhead is nasty!
With this car only having 46,000 miles I'm wondering if the rack itself is at fault or could it be just tie rods ends? Still costs either way and it needs to be safe,
