Changing ATF on Kia - Need Advice	Sign In

We need to change the automatic transmission fluid in our 2005 Kia Rio Cinco. I have a few questions.

1. Is it "okay" for us to change this fluid, or is it something that only the dealer or an auto mechanic shop should do?

2. I understand that there will probably be a filter that needs to be replaced. Can I assume that the counter person at the parts store will be able to tell me which filter and how much fluid to use?

3. How can we tell which is the pan for the transmission fluid?

4. Will we need anything other than sockets to remove the pan and/or filter?

5. Do we need to get a gasket and seal-a-gasket to replace the pan?

6. Are there any tips, t ricks, concerns or precautions that we should be aware of to do this job properly?

7. Is this a job that two people who are not mechanics could do correctly?

Thanks again for your time, it is appreciated. We don't want to make any mistakes and make matters worse.

Well Hello again.

Let's do this like the other one.

1. Yes it is perfectly fine for you to do this.

2. Yes there is a filter that needs replaced also.

3. The transmission pan will be a little flat pan that has a lot of bolts around it. The oil pan will be deeper and harder to get to the bolts.

4. A socket and ratchet set should do just fine.

5. If there is a gasket needed, the parts counter person should know. Some of the gaskets are reusable. Without seeing the gasket, I can not say for sure.

6. The transmission fluid is SK ATF SP-III or DIAMOND ATF SP-III. Mainly look for the SP-III. Be sure to fill it to the correct level. Do not over fill as there are no provisions to drain any without dropping the pan again. Be sure you have a large enough pan to catch all the fluid. It can get messy as you remove the bolts and the pan starts to drop.

7. If you go slow there is no reason you can not accomplish this job.
