I'm having some strange problems with my 2002 X-Type (USA). I was having trouble with the car starting, so I tried jumping it from another car, and it started. So, I've had the battery checked and charged (it had sat for a couple months, so I guess it lost some of its charge), and so the battery is fine now.

But the car still won't start on its own… it just cranks and cranks and cranks, and nothing. I've been racking my brain, but can't figure out what would make the difference that it would start in a jump but won't start under a good battery on its own… Anybody have an idea?

How many cranking amps is your battery? Sounds to me like you aren't getting enough juice to the starter. You might want to try to get your hands on a newer battery with enough cranking amps to see what happens. Make sure all your connections are nice and tight. I've seen battery connectors fail even with being fairly tightly connected. Sometimes you gotta clean things up get it all nice and tight. I doubt very much that could cause your problem, but obviously with the extra battery you are getting more juice to your starter. So you just have to get more juice to your starter with only one battery.

I'd check all your wires and make sure they all fit tight.. other than that i'm not too sure.. it could be your starter itself..
