Hi,
If anyone can help, i would be very grateful.
VW Golf, 1.4, 2003, 37000 miles.
I had an oil service in October. All fine since then, but over the last month the car has begun shuddering when starting off in first gear. It feels like it might be something to do with the clutch? It wasnt doing this before and i am using the same biting point, but the car shudders as i start off. I stop this, if i rev the car more and it stops it cutting out.

I am about to take the car to the garage soon, but any advice would be great

A maybe at what's happening here:

By your description the clutch is not applying even friction and making this shake from start up (motion) which could be oil on the friction disc itself. It is possible (don't know this one specifically) that a seal (rear main possible) is leaking onto/into the clutch and they can do this from that and if so there should be some oil evidence of a rear main seal leaking.

Why you ask? I might be that a fresh oil change has cleaned up some dirt that was acting to assist the seal in conjunction with main bearings that may have been stressed just the smidge from no oil pressure at start ups with an empty oil filter especially.

If you find the clutch all oiled up know that the leak needs to be fixed first or it would just do this again with a replacement.

Just my opinion this happens with higher mile, marginally maintained engines more often than not,
