99 Toyota Camry 200,miles
4 cylinder
Brother in law is having trouble with his car overheating
He has put in 2 different thermostats with no luck
Can someone help me steer him in the right direction ???

Thermostats are rarely the cause of overheating. The most common cause is low coolant, inoperative fan or clogged radiator. Also, once you have drained the coolant to change the thermostat it is very difficult to get all the air pockets out again.
The biggest concern is that once these engines have been overheated, even once, serious internal damage can be done. The fact that this engine has 200K miles opens it up to even more likelihood of internal damage.
Is this overheating showing up more when left idling or at cruising speeds?

It seems to overheat when it’s idling, then if you rev up the engine the needle seems to drop.
He checked the fan and everything seems good
He checked the fluid level as well

I don't know how long he's owned this car but it is normal for the engine to get hotter at idle when the AC is off. The fans are programmed to come on at higher temps but the temp should start to drop immediately when the fan comes on.
The symptoms are pointing to a fan problem. With that many miles the fans could be real tired and running slower.

I also have an overheating problem with my 2001 Mercury Marquis. I flushed the cooling system and replaced the coolant and thermostat without resolving the problem. How would I determine whether the problem is the water pump or radiator or something else?
