Car only runs when gas line is loosened Sign In

1998 Camry 4 CYL.

I replaced the timing belt, and water pump. The car got really hot afterwards so I turned it off and replaced the thermostat also. Now it will not start!

It will fire a bit when i crank it but not start..... almost like its not getting fuel. So i loosened the fuel line right above the filter to see if its pumping fuel and it started right up! Fuel shooting everywhere, i tightened the line back down and it died! what gives? I've tried loosening/tightening with the fuel cap on and off thinking maybe its a pressure thing... but can't get it to start with the line tightened. any help is appreciated! thanks!

I've checked camshaft position sensor and ignition coils. Fuel pressure is normal and holds at 50psi

That really makes no sense...... I'll have to think about this one....

Normally I would tell you to go back over your work & double check all the connections.

It could just be coincidence that is started when you loosened the line. I wouldn't recommend doing an "uncontrolled" bleed like that again, one spark & your no start problem would be solved (just not the way you wanted). You could hook a fuel press gauge with a bleeder on it, and bleed the pressure into a safe container to put your theory to the test.....

But still, double check all the connections around where you were working..........

You may have a fuel filter that is plugged solid . When you crack open line it relieve's some of the pressure holding the blockage in place thus letting enough fuel to get by to run. Retighten line and filter packs up again.
