Car lost power, started knocking and blew out 3rd cylinder spark plug

I have a 1996 Mercury Tracer Trio with a 1.9L 4 cylinder engine w/ 5 speed transmission. I went down to NC for a family emergency in wich the car was running fine and had no issues at all. On the way home from NC my car started to lose power on hills and started sputtering every so often. Then soon after that I started hearing a knocking sound coming from the engine. I made it home alright but the next morning I got up popped the hood and started the car to take a look at it and I heard a pop sound and then it sounded like there was a hole in the exhaust but when I got under the hood the 3rd cyclinder spark plug blew right out. Does anyone have any idea of what could have happened. My first though was I spun a rod and possibly put a hole in the piston but then I was told the catalytic converter could be clogged and with it being clogged the backpressure could cause a knocking and possible blow out a plug like that. Any ideas? I really need to get this fixed seeing as its my only car. Please let me know. Thanks.

Your really trying to over analyze this. The problem was simple, the plug wasn't tight enough. At this point you have likely ruined the threads so you will have to install a helicoil in the head to repair the threads. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

the plug was tight enough...it actually broke the end of the plug off inside the head. but the plug not being tight wouldnt cause the loss of power, sputtering and knocking though.

It would if the end of the plug broke off and rattled around in the cylinder. It's pretty hard to say how something like that started but a mere crack in the plug could have set it off. Again a loose plug would contribute to that also. You probably need to use a boroscope and take a look inside the cylinder and see if there is any visible damage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

thats the thing though all the other stuff like the loss of power and everything happened before the plug blew out.

Yes, a damaged plug would misfire.

Agree with HT; Over analyzing. Replace the plug, then start and run the engine. Easy enough to test for backpressure (plugged cat). Also, from your symptoms, might want to check the fuel filter. Loren SW Washington

Also, from your symptoms, might want to check the fuel filter.....I recomend this, #1 buy harbor frieght style rubber tip push on comp gage, should be about 200 psi, compair to #1 cyl, if ok start eng holding comp gage in place to cancel the compretion noise, if ok repair threads using blown out spark plug type insert. Reasemble car and check fuel filter and cat for posible plugage, check other plugs for tightnes, about 32 lbs. road test, Have a great day. |
