Car Starts - but wont move. Second opinion needed. Sign In

2001 Chevy Cavalier
dont know the engine size.

Hi,

I was driving along, slowing down to turn, stopped and then the car wouldnt move. The steering, brakes were all locked up. I turned off the car, turned it back on - it starts fine - but it will not budge. I was told that it was because my gas valve or something clogged up and that it needed to be replaced. A 650$ potential bill.

Is this plausible? or are they trying to take me to the cleaners?

thanks!

This is to say it runs, idles fine but when you put it in gear doesn't move? Does the engine rev up at all or just stay at idle? If it revs up in gear and doesn't move that's a transmission/driveline problem,

Your leaving something out, I don't know what, but it doesn't make sense. You say the car starts and runs fine? But won't move? The breaks and steering will or should function if the engine is running, as they are accessory items and individually powered by belts, vacuum and/or hydrualics. Highly unlikely they would all go out together if the engine is still running.
Second, You don't say what kind of transmission you have? The problem could be as simple as a pin snaping off the automatic shifter cable to the clutch plate failing in a stick tranny.....see? Both would stop you cold, and neither are even remotly related....and are completely different trannys..?
By the way there is no such animal as a 'gas valve' or any kind of valve getting 'clogged' that would axount for this, and if there were it wouldn't cost $650.00, so next time you write...bring some notes. Thank you.

Good luck !!
