Car Shakes --- Shakes Violently As Speed Increases Sign In

Car in question: Honda Civic 2004.
Background/History: A month ago, our timing belt broke/went bad...my wife drove it approximately 60 miles after it began making a terrible noise, so she could have done some damage at this time. I also had to use a dealer I do not trust much as a matter of convenience, so this issue could have arose there.

Issue: Car starts to shake/vibrate stronger as the speed increases...it is slightly detectable at speeds as low as 20-30mph, but really becomes obvious above 50mph.

The car has never been quite the same as it was before the timing belt issue a month ago, but the shaking seems to really only come to life during Thanksgiving travels this year when we drove 10 hour drives over the course of several days.

Please help---I can't fix this myself, but I want to be educated about the problem before I take it to a mechanic---and I will defintely take it to a more reputable mechanic this time around. Thanks

It's going to require some testing to determine what the problem may be. You will need to do a cylinder leakdown test and compression test and see what they reveal.

What kind of shape are your tires in?.....
Take a good look at them and make sure there are no bubbles or shifted belts in the thread.

How does the engine sound at idle & when you rev it up?

Two of the tires are 6 mos old, the other two tires are ancient...not sure how old they are. Its funny you mention the engine, because the sound of it in idle and otherwise changed after the timing belt was replaced. I'm not sure I can describe the change, but defintely different...I wouldn't say it is weaker sounding or anything---

If all this started after the timing belt replacement......Pop off the cover & double check your marks.........

Or we could just check the compression as I suggested in the first place and save all that work.

Thanks everyone for your contributions. I know more than I did before. I will let you all know what the mechanic tells me... Pirate

Check engine light on? Timing belt off on that would turn the check engine light on due to cam and crank phase differences (VVT).

I'm starting to think what Sidom is thinking in that you have a tire problem causing your vibration since it seems to be speed related.

If the engine was misfiring, the engine had loss of power, or you felt the vibration when you reved the engine in park, then I would would lean more toward an engine problem.

I'll try revving the engine to see if I get vibration

Or we could do a compression test to rule out the timing belt................

Compression test is what I'm going to tell the mechanic first...then I'm going to say loudly to myself so he/she can hear me ... "or it could be the tires I guess...hmmm..."

We don't have the benefit of driving it. If a tech drives it he should be able to tell the difference easily.

The best idea here would be to tell the tech the problem you are having & the work that has been done.
Let him drive the car and then determine the best course of action in finding your problem...
