Buying car with salvage title, help...... Sign In

I'm looking at a car for my daughter and can get a very good price on it. Its a 2002 Pon Sunfire, 88,000 miles that is in great shape, just a little rust here and there. This couple bought another vehicle after there second child and car is to small for them. They bought this car with a salvage title and drove it for two years now without any problems, the car runs great and looks good too. Is there anyway I can find out why this car has a salvage title and what may have happened to it? Is there any where online I can find out or any place I can call? Is it bad to buy a car with a title like this? Thanks....

Its all in perspective. First there is always carfax reports and things of that nature. Will they tell you exactly what happened? probably not.

Salvage cars can be good or bad depending upon the nature of the repair. First let me state they have a very poor resale value, but if its your daughters first car it may be something that is retired by you anyways. Plus by the time your done with it, it will probably have a minimal value, salvage title or not.

The next big thing, since you said it had no major problems mechanically is the safety of the repair that was made. Are the air bags still intact in equipped? Have the brake lines been cut and if so spliced properly? If its had any major structural components repaired were they welded or repaired properly? Get underneath the car, pop the hood and look at the radiator support. Peel the carpet in the trunk back for an inspection.

I would not be afraid of it as a first car for my daughter if I had really inspected it for safety. Please feel free to contact me if you would like any more info...I could probably go on for days...
