Burnt up EGR Valve

I have a 96 Chrysler Concorde w/ 3.3 Liter Engine, what would cause the EGR Valve to melt completely? This is new to me... never happened before. I was out yesterday, trying to get my car to be thoroughly diagnosed and the car was dragging (30MPH) and then all of a sudden it dropped to 10MPH!!! I ended up having to be towed up the street to the dianostic place. Yesterday was a doozy!!! After I replaced the EGR Valve w/ a brand new one, I thought I was home free. I tried to test the car out in the parking lot I was in (I barely drove 30 Ft) and the new EGR Valve was starting to melt!!!! WTH!!! Please give me some direction as to what this is so next time I'll know what the heck to check for!!!!!

Well it sounds like the drivability problem you are having is overheating the exhaust. A restricted exhaust can give the problems you described (no power, won't accelerate) but usually won't overheat the exhaust to that extent. Also (and more probable) a timing issue can do that, whether it's valve timing (mechanical) or ignition timing can give you low power & overheat the exhaust. I've seen some turn the cat cherry red. I would start there.........
