Burning Oil Sign In

I have a '95 Chevy 1500 pickup around 156,000 miles and each weekend it is driven out of town from Pittsburgh, PA to Leesburg, VA about 220 miles. So each weekend it puts on 440 plus about 20 or so miles down in Leesburg. When it comes back it is down a quart of oil. Thats the only time its being driven during the course of a week. Friday Morning to Sunday Night. Monday - Thursday it just sits parked.

Should this be expected because of the long trips, or is this going to require repairs?

Note: There's no blue smoke or anything coming out of the exhaust.

All vehicles with some age on them are gonna use some oil but you need not worry unless seeing smoke or puddles under the truck, to be on the safe side inspect the top/ front/ and bottom of engine for leaks.

High miles, high speed, high temps will use more oil. If it's not leaking it then I'd switch to a higher vis oil which should cut it down some. You could spend a fortune and may only cut consumption by half. If it runs well I think I'd just play with oil viscosities - 15-40 perhaps?

Alright next oil change i guess i'll bump it up to 15-40, its currently using 5-30. If i'd switch to synthetic would that make any difference?

I'm a huge fan of synthetics. They don't have 15-40 but you could mix 20-50 and 10-30 and should about get that. I've had plenty of cars in a lifetime - some use oil and some don't and not always an indicator of the "end is near" type thing. Sometimes the synthetics burn faster or slower?? I usually add quality conventional oil if needed and sometimes don't on anything of my own right now between 3,000 mile changes.

Bet you can get it to needing just 1/2 qt with just the oil on the same run as now and I'd add the 1/2 qt. If not garaged I'd switch to 10-30 for Winter but it may not mind with synthetics.

If it runs well and isn't fouling up plugs or causing any other issues it should be fine,
