Hi, everyone. Apologize in advance if this has been asked before. Searched the threads but didn't see anything that really helped as of yet.

I have a '99 Mercury Cougar. It has an automatic sunroof that isn't working. If you push the button, it sounds like it wants to open, but it doesn't move. You can hear the motor (I think) kinda struggling along, but nada. It's been like this since I bought the car, so I can't say for certain how long it's done it for. There's no visible damage around the sunroof or that general area from what I can tell, though, if that makes any difference. I wish I could be more descriptive, but my knowledge of cars ends at turning the key and pushing the pedal.

Is there a history of this with the type of car I have? Is it worth taking it to a garage? Any safe assumptions on what it could be? I don't know any mechanic types out here (college) that can do it for me for less than a garage would charge, and obviously, my '99 Cougar isn't worth dumping, say, a thousand bucks into. I assume it would be much cheaper if it were one thing and not the other, but I have no idea how to differentiate any of the potential problems. (Thus, coming to you great folks.)

Thanks to anyone who responds, appreciate the help.

It might just be stuck from lack of use. Some sunroof jobs are not a factory job but done after the car was made and I can't be sure how it was intended to operate. Many will pop up in just the back like a vent or when requested the other way will slide out of sight. I'd try helping it carefully and then if it works armor all the rubber where it might have stuck. That's just a guess at what it might be. Go easy on the motor. It is strong and could strip gears is asked too hard,
