If my repair shop put something other than brake fluid in my master cylinder could it take 5,000 miles before it locked up the brakes? I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with aprox 45,000 miles on it. If the fluid was almost full on the day of servicing and they topped it off with something other than brake fluid, like anti freeze or power steering fluid. It is important to note that my mechanic is a friend of mine and he believes that the process would only take about 10 days and not 3 months. I am sure that he is not lying to me, but could he be wrong?

The sealing brake parts are NOT compatible with anything not rubber friendly. If an oil product was used -- seal would expand and fail. All of them!! If you can find out what was put in that would help. Water based products wouldn't kill it but would cause rust and still need a whole flush out. Bet a wheel cylinder or caliper froze up for the immediate problem. This could get VERY expensive and more so if you have ABS in the vehicle, T

Thanks Tom. It is definitely an oil substance. We are not sure what yet. Is it possible for it to take as much as 3 months for it to cause a problem?

YES. It could take a while to start damaging the parts depending on how much was put in. Again -- the solution is to replace all of them T
