Brakes disappeared! Any help please. Sign In

My car is a 1993 Ford Escort station wagon... 1.8L. The mileage is high. I'd say around 300,000. This morning I had my brakes working. When I drove it after work it was fine or rather nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I parked the car to make a quick stop, came back out started it up and the brake went to the floor. Now, when the car is turned off, there is brake pressure when I applied. I turn it back on.... the result is the pedal drops to the floor. What is up with this? Should my brakes fail so quickly? Any help is deeply appreciated. Also, the weather here in Ohio is unseasonably cold... if that has any bearing.

Brake fluid level way too low could do just that with little or no warning. The bigger problem is IF it's low then WHY is it that low?

Filling it up if found low may correct the problem for the moment but it needs a total brake check for wear which displaces fluid and more importantly leaks!

If found full the likely problem since this was all at once is a failed master cylinder.

Note: The difference in "feel" engine on and off is that the power assist quits with engine off and will make for a firmer pedal feel even while failed,

Thanks Tom! The power assist explains why there is a differance in pressure. I turely appreciate your insight. Thanks again!
