2000 Dodge Ram: full size pickup with auto trans and V-8. The brakes are super sensitive and almost locks up with very little pressure applied. I can't tell if it's the front or the rear that's bitting but once you hit the brakes they just about lock up. So the truck is being used right now with the vacuum hose detached from the brake booster and the line blocked off. With this done you're able to apply normal (manual) pedal pressure to stop the truck with more control. Could this be the power brake booster? Or would it be the master cylinder maybe with one section blocked off causing brake fluid pressure to one side, be it the front brake or the rear brake. There is plenty of vacuum at the hose but is there a check valve that meters the amount of vacuum. The brake light and the ABS light are both lit on the dash. I'm more concerned with the brake light than the ABS light right now. I'm thinking master cylinder but tell me what you think and thanks for the help. Go Canada!

have you had the abs computer checked for problems? I had the same problem with my 91 aerostar, it went back to ford dealer after being checked by many techs. after $750 worth of brake diagnostics, someone finally found that the abs computer was shot, which controls the master cylinder and brake proportioning pressures. also you might want to check for manufacturer recalls for brake system.

With any brake issue always start at the wheels; making sure everything from there to the hydraulics are functioning properly. Things like a leaking wheel cylinder or an axle seal wetting the rear brake shoes will cause the brakes to grab. Most but not all lock up problems are a mechanical one not so much hydraulic.
