I have a 96 olds bravada with the smart trac. when driving pushing the brake is hard as a rock. If you pump them it softens up an quickly pulls hard left. when that happens you can hear the anti lock kick in and then the car stops pulling so hard left. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are the brakes making any grinding or squealing noises? is there any fluid leaking from the brakes?

In reply to Tom and Imtheguy. No noise or fluids leaking or grinding noise. and as for the codes I don't have the means to check them. could there be an electrical problem here. My daughter dropped the u joint and continued to drive causing the front drive shaft to slap the bottom of the transmission and pulling the wire harness apart. those are fixed now, but it seems to have started shortly after this.

Sounds to me like you damaged one of the speed sensor signal wires to one of the front wheels and the ABS module is interpreting that as a brake lock up and engaging the ABS.

Would that cause the pedal to be hard, and release with pumping the brake?

Yes, that's how ABS activation feels. You should hear and feel a buzzing when it happens.

You really need a professional scan tool and wiring diagram to be able to diagnose this. With the scan tool you can read the speed data from each wheel to look for a problem.
