Brake Repair Question Sign In

I would appreciate some advice.

I have a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van, which I bought new about 26 months ago. It now has about 35,000 miles on it. It's been taken to the dealership where we bought it on a regular schedule for maintenance. It was last in the shop for the rather extensive 30K service a few months ago. At that time, the brakes were supposed to have been inspected as part of the service. We were not told of any problems with the brakes.

Now, a few months later, I bring the van back in for routine service (oil change, tire rotation, etc) and to check the A/C. After a few hours, I get a call from the service adviser saying that they've found the brakes are completely shot, that all four pads and rotors need to be replaced, that the rotors are so deeply pitted that they cannot be resurfaced (without going below specifications) and must be replaced.

We have not done anything unusual with the van since the 30K mile service. I'm wondering if this scenario is reasonable, or if what really happened is that they didn't inspect the brakes properly (or at all) during the 30K service. Could the brakes have shown little wear at 30K miles, and now be completely shot at 35K miles? Do rotors on a new vehicle usually need to be REPLACED by 35K miles?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Re: Brake Repair Question Sign In

It isn't all that unusual to need brakes at 35k. Did they say all four wheels? Except for rusted parts, brake life is highly dependant on how the vehicle is used and driver habits.

If they are that close now then they probably didn't check very hard just a short while ago. Rotors in most cases are not worth turning for another round as they don't come new with a lot of extra metal. Sounds like you are being scared into this and it shouldn't be ignored but do you beleive this place?
