Thanks for the advice in advance!
I am in desperate need of brakes and I am going to the shop today to get them done.
I have a 2007 Nissan Sentra with about 45,000 miles on it.
I don't want to say I drive the car hard but I do a lot of driving, lots of highway, lots of stop and go.
The brakes are at the point where they are past squealers!
Anyway, I'm going to get brakes today. I'm hoping I just need pads. But, in the past, on other cars, I have been hit up to cut the rotors!
I have no idea what this means and my question is.... is this necessary or is this just something unnecessary on a newer car that mechanics try to due to increase the bill? Every time I seem to ask someone about this, I never get a straight answer. So this time, I'm taking it to the forums!
I apologize if this is a stupid question. I am on a tight budget and don't want to get suckered for stuff I don't need.

If the pads are worn down to where the backing had damaged the rotor, you either need to have them machined or replaced. If the metal has not touched the rotors and there is no vibration when braking, then you can just do pads. I do not recommend just a pad replacement though. This will shorten the life of the new pads and accelerate the deterioration of the old pads also. So I highly recommend either machining or replacing rotors with each brake pad change. This will ensure you have good brakes to keep you and family safe.
