Brake Bleeding/ starter change/ belt change Sign In

I am trying to bleed the brakes from a saturn 97 sw

Where do I bleed them from??
---------------------------------------------------------------
I am trying to change the starter also since it heats up and the starter wont move, gets stuck.

Should I have a pro do it??

---------------------------------------------------------------
I also went to autozone and got a belt, but the old belt looks bigger...

Is there a way to adjust the motor or something so it could fit?

You need to start from the R. rear. Bleed until no air is visible. (The bleeder valve is just above the axle housing). Then, move to the L. rear and do the same. Then, move to the R. Front, then to the L. Front. Be sure to keep the master cylinder full while doing this. The starter replacement is pretty straight forward. Disconnect the negative battery cable prior to getting started. Pay close attention to how the wires are connected to the starter. The belt replacement can be tricky. It must be routed correctly. Compare the new belt to the old one to make sure you've got the right length. You didn't say if this was a SW1 or SW2. I attached a diagram for the SW1. If it's the SW2, let me know and I can post that one. (There should be a decal under the hood showing the belt routing).

Re: Brake Bleeding/ starter change/ belt change Sign In

They are charging me 80$

to bleed the brakes and remove and put the starter

does that sound decent???

i did not want to mess with the brakes since it's a serious thing

and the starter is in the bottom and I will have to work down there

risking the car falling on me..

Ill just have the guy do the starter for sure..

should I do the brakes??? or let the pro's do it??

The belt was really easy.... the diagram on the hood helped tons

thanks Angelic

$80.00 seems very reasonable to me. Like you said, brakes are VERY important, and if you have any reservations, best left to a pro.

Djera; And why are we changing the booster? What are your symptoms? $35 to change the booster? That's gotta be wrong.Unsure

Re: Brake Bleeding/ starter change/ belt change Sign In

it has breaks but only half ways, they found a broken lil pump where the back break goes, it costs about 8.

they said that was the reason the car was the way it was.

when I change front P to D it makes a thump , same with Reverse.

when I am on the street and the car is switching t0 a higher speed... it makes that thump also

One thing I do notice is that the car is very accelerated,

but what does the breaks have to do with the engine bouncing all over..?

The noise you are describing sounds more like engine and or transmission mounts, and unless the broken mounts pulled the hose out of the vacuum brake booster or broke the valve at the brake booster vacuum line, I would say they are cheating themselves out of labor as the booster assembly is much higher than 35.00

Mounts where changed 3 days ago...

This car only has 3 mounts. the two bottom one's where changed and the top one was fine..

the transmission one was very beat up

the car is still the same way

A friend of mine told me that it could be the transmission sensor.

what do you guys think???

Somewhere, back in the posts, you mentioned that the engine was running 'fast'. Do you have a check engine light or a service engine soon light illuminated? Not sure where we got off of the starter/brakes issues, but... When you initially turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, does the check engine (or service soon) lamp illuminate? Most parts stores will retrieved stored trouble codes for free. Post any that you have, then we'll go from there.

AZ doesn't scan anymore? That surprises me, but they may have gotten into trouble selling too many parts that didn't fix the problem. That's the problem with 'scanners'. People think that they are a crystal ball that you plug in and it tells you what part to replace. Not the case, AT ALL. They give you a trouble code that tells you what system is seeing a problem. Then, using a diagnostic flow chart, you diagnose where the problem is. Just for an example: EGR code. I don't know how many customers have gotten that code and replaced the EGR valve. Oooops. Could be a circuit issue, sensor issue, plugged passageway, ect. So, to finally get around to answering your question, you could spend $3,000-$4,000.00 on a good scanner, but it's only going to give you codes. Much cheaper to pay a shop to pull codes and diagnose the problem, rather than get the codes and start replacing parts until it goes away, if ever.

I didn't bother looking. Many 'scanners' will pull codes. No biggie. It's what you do with the codes that you retrieve.
Just because you come up with a O2 sensor code, that doesn't neccessarily mean that the O2 is bad. I wouldn't waste your money.
