Bolts would not come off when changing a tire

So, I was trying to change my tire to the spare, but the bolts of the old tire would not come off. It then had to be towed, and the guy claimed that the bolts had to be sawed off and replaced. The explanation was that when the bolts were being applied when replacing the tire at the shop, because of the torque, the bolts actually got "welded" on. Is that possible, or was this a bullSh!t story to get $60 out of me. Thanks

$60 sounds like a pretty good deal to get seized lugs off and replace the studs and nuts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

$60 sounds like a pretty good deal to get seized lugs off and replace the studs and nuts. So the phenomenon is called "seized lugs"? My father was saying it saids it sounds like bullSh!t that metal would melt at room temperature. It was actually $60 for labor, and $63 for the replacement parts. $40 for towing. Still no ripoff here? Ok, so metal didn't melt, the cross threaded the nuts onto the lugs over time. Learn something new everyday,

It actually happens quite often when inexperienced people install lugnuts with an impact gun. Natural corrosion on an aluminum wheel can happen also. When a lugnut doesn't come right off, it usually means it's going to break off.

Yep, same problem.. and it was all caused by the tire company where I had my tire fixed, they used an impact and must have tightened them as much as it would hammer.. Had to change 3 bolts...hell of a time... They should only tighten them to an applied amount with a torque wrench, if not they are not doing it right..Gotta watch everytime they do a tire..

No, metal does not melt at room temp . BUT, when a bolt or nut is ran down at high speed or is started slightly cocked the friction can create the temp required .It's called galling . If you doubt it, next time you see it happen reach out and grab the sucker. Caution you will get burned.Yes you can use an airgun to install wheels . Run nuts/bolts down finger tight then use a devise called a "torque stick". It limits the torque the gun can apply . I used them for years with no problems. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

any respectable tire shop will use a torque wrench to torque the lug nuts on the wheel i used to work in the tire repair business and we would either use a torque wrench or torque sockets. i prefer to use a torque wrench myself and i even use a torque wrench on my own vehicles
