Been having a problem for quite a while now Sign In

Hello, kind of new here. Found this place by searching Google with "car help forum"..
The car is a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 6cyl 3.1
Long story short; Anti-freeze was leaking into oil. I had a friend help replace the Intake Manifold Gasket. He decided to start replacing hoses, which now I think was a huge mistake. After the first problem was fixed, a new one was created. The hoses weren't hooked up correctly and it caused the service engine light to come on. The code was p1441. while replacing that part and it still not solving the problem, I noticed that the hoses were probably not hooked up correctly. I'm not a mechanic, but how the hoses were connected just didn't make much sense to me.
I went to a pic-a-part place to find other cars to see exactly how this was supposed to hook up. I found four cars that had been hooked up differently from the one I have, but all the same way. I figure those four probably are the correct way. Anyway, There is a part that all four of those were missing. Not sure if the part itself is just in the wrong spot, or what.
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o506/XApathyX/notsure.jpg I can edit the post and add it as a photo, rather than a link you have to copy and paste if anyone wants.
In this photo, the round thing seems to be only in the car I have. Couldn't find it in any other car. Not really sure of the name of it, how it hooks up, or if it's even supposed to be there

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on my little problem here.

I'm no expert but it could possibly be the Vapor Cannister Purge Solenoid.

link deleted................ not allowed

What part did you replace due to the code? The code has to do with a fuel system vapor leak which could be a number of things and not one exact part.

Now that you have the hoses hooked up properly is it running okay? If it's just showing a code why don't you clear the code and see if it pops back up. It could be as simple as your gas gap not being tight.

No matter what it is, if your car has it and it was running fine before, then it definitely should be there.

Thank you VERY much for answering the question of what that thing was. I'm beyond frustrated with this by now, so sorry if I'm not making a clear picture of what's going on.
What I replaced was this thing http://images.wrenchead.com/...size/DUS/214-567.jpg
Every time I Googled for that code, people kept mentioning that thing, so I replaced it thinking that was the problem. Once I realized that the hoses weren't connected correctly and went to the pic a part place to see. None of the cars had the Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid(The circle thing I didn't know the name of) and therefore, I didn't know where it was supposed to be connected. When I do connect the hoses the way I saw at the car place, the part you posted is no longer connected to anything. As of right now, it only has one hose on it going to the part I posted with the clickable link. The car actually starts without it, but the idle goes nuts and tries to stall out.

Tomorrow morning, I'm going to get a nice HD video of exactly what's going on under the hood so everyone can have a way better picture of my problem.
Once again, thanks very much for replying. It's really putting an end to this headache.

Never mind any codes if this job was butchered and anything not put back where it belongs it simply WILL be a problem. Don't work on cars if you can't pay attention to things like that or all hell comes of it,

well brother I had a 91 with the 3.1, the head gasket( I believe) went bad and when I asked my mechenic he said the contaminates would get all through the engine and just doing the head gaskets would not be worth it you have to tear the whole engine down, my friend at napa said he did an intake gasket on the 3.1 and it was a royal pain, I had one in my yard and I tore it down so I could haul it away alone in the wagon and I'd have to say you picked the wrong engine to mess with, good luck though

dr.donut: The job was butchered so never mind whether it is an easier engine or not. Things aren't even hooked up so this job may have just made the whole thing worse,

What the heck? LOL What is that line doing there on the back side of the purge valve underneath the EVAP vacuum switch connector? That doesn't go there. Look at the emissions vacuum schematic under the hood for the hose routing. Plus you have a rip in the elbow on the emission line after the vacuum switch that your going to have to fix.

Should look something like this:

This is currently what it looks like. This is also how the cars at the pic-a-part place show it.

As for it being "Butchered". No. The job was to replace a gasket so the anti-freeze and oil didn't mix. While all this stuff was going on, the car hasn't exactly been driven all that much. The person helping me do this is a certified mechanic. How he screwed this up so bad is completely beyond me. Considering the small amount that the car has been driven, I seriously doubt that too much damage has been done.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who has helped.

You still have it routed wrong.

The line from the manifold goes to the purge valve nipple on the top. There should be a line that goes from the lower purge valve nipple to one side of the vacuum switch. On the other side of the vacuum switch is were the line from the charcoal canister connects. You don't even have one side of the vacuum switch connected. Look at the vacuum schematic above.

Re: Been having a problem for quite a while now Sign In

I made that video about 2 hours ago. After I printed the diagram, I switched it to how it showed. Or at least how I thought it showed. Everything is hooked up now. At least I think.

OK, after you explained where it all went. I actually did hook it up correctly from the diagram. I'm going to record it once again and post it a little later. As for the rubber joint with a tear in it. I have a few more that I can put there. I bought some a bit ago when one of the others split in half (why there is duck tape on the line). Going to clear the check engine light and drive it around. In about 3 or 4 days, I'll post back to say whether or not it stayed off, or came back on.
Also going to call my friend and KINDLY let him know that he totally messed up the hose routing. Also kind of scared to ask him for anymore help should things go wrong anymore with that car.

Once again, thanks for all the help and replies.

Off exact topic but pertinent: When things aren't done right and problems come you need to go back not that I've ever made a mistake ever!

Wild note but real mechanics wash their hands BEFORE taking a leak! Did I say that?

Re: Been having a problem for quite a while now Sign In

I drove the car all over town yesterday and and some more this morning. The Service Engine light would have definitely come back on by now if something was wrong. It might be a placebo effect, but it also sounds better when running. However, if anyone would still like me to post a video of how it's currently routed, I can still do that. Looking at it now, it's quite embarrassing how it was hooked up before. Not referring to the video I posted, but how it was before that. Once again, thanks to everyone for helping me out with this.

Quick question about this forum. My time zone is PST. What exactly do I set the Time Offset to in Display Settings so the time shown for my posts is accurate?

I also have another problem that has nothing to do with the car EVAP system(I think that's what it's called). Not sure if I should post it here, or start a new thread on it.

You can adjust the time in your profile settings but all it changes is what you see. You already have the right time on my end.

We don't need any video. If you're good, that's all we need.

Re: Been having a problem for quite a while now Sign In

I figured yours would show you the correct time. I was asking so I could fix it for myself. ATM, I have it set to -3. I tried -8, since that seems to work for the majority of the forums I've visited, but this one doesn't seem to be working like that. It's not too important, just so I could tell when I posted.

EIDT - -3 is the closest I can get it. The time it shows is off by a little over 20 minutes.

Like I said, you're the only one that sees that. It shows the correct time to everyone else.
