Hello,

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus and I keep up with my maintenance faithfully. My car would not start (August, 2008); I had to have it towed to the nearest dealership and discovered the battery and alternator died out. Should this have happened to a 2005 car and wouldn't this have been detected during my regular maintenance in February 2008?

It might not have been detected in February with any testing.

A suggestion on batteries: Look at the battery to see how old it is. There's a code or obvious marking as to the month and year it was made on ALL of them. If original as this one probably was then you can go by the door jam as to when the car was made and guess the battery is a month older than that. This car could have been made sometime in 2004 and battery was a full 5 years old. Despite all battery claims of how many months they are warranteed to last the dependable life drop off sharply after 3 years and that much worse over 4 years.

A failure can be a short inside battery causing the alternator to overwork , burn out and hence need both. I suggest tracking the acutal age of batteries and mark them in plain date/month if obscured and put on the pro-active replacement list at whatever other service you may do after it's 3 years old. The later model cars cause major headaches with battery failures other than just a replacement. Some items will lock down car, alarms need resetting, radios may not work till reset etc. When replacing a battery a "memory saver" should be used for when it's disconnected for replacement,
