Bad valve lifter?

2000 Chevy S-10 2.2 4 cyl. 34K. When starting the engine cold I can hear a clicking or slapping sound then after driving about 7 or 8 minutes it goes away and the engine runs quite. Could this be a valve lifter?

Perhaps: Changing oil to a high quality synthetic and keeping up with oil changing might clear up a "sticking" lifter if that's what it is,
