Back Tires Keep Cupping	Sign In

I have a 2006 Honda Civic with 52K miles on it. I have had two four-wheel alignments done, and been through two sets of back tires, and once again the tires are cupping. What gives?

has this car been towed at all?

i had a car flatbeded one time and my tires were wearing like crazy and the local shop had a hard time aligning it.

turns out the tow truck guy but his tie-down chains around the rear tracking arms and when he snugged the chains down it bent them.

long story short. theres not much for an alignment shop to "align" in the rear. take a long look over your rear suspension. something maybe bent.

Just some thoughts on that. The alignments should have at least said it was not in spec and couldn't be with any normal adjustments.

Some brands of tires had issues with that. Tires would just show a whole series of flat spots and make a ton of noise when bad enough. I had some back when and even ridiculous rototing of tires wouldn't correct it once it started??

IMO a good tire should wear out gracefully even if alignment was wildly off I don't get the cupping thing unless the tire construction also has something to do with it,

Just to add to what Tom said the tire tread makes a difference on tread wear on some cars. A tire will cup because it is bouncing on the road more than normal. Most of the weight is in the front of the car. This is why the tire manufacture recommends tire rotation every 6-8 thousand miles. The strut holds the tire to the road and prevents any unnesessary wheel or tire bounce. 52k is a bit early for worn struts but I have seen it happen. So even if all the suspension is in good shape the tires may cup with in 25k if not rotated regularly.
