BELT NOISE - WET DAYS WHY WHY WHY??? Sign In

2004 Nissan Sentra -

the belt (the one spins under the engine hood), i dont know what it is called, only during rainny or wet days, is making noise, i have 46,000 miles, I noticed this problem after around 10,000 miles, and had it replaced by dealer before, but after about 10,000 miles or so, the belt is making noise again, I believe this is the forth time this problem occurs.

Anyone encounters this before?

This just may be the belt itself and the pulleys being shiny where they contact. Can sound like all hell's breaking loose and it not a bad bearing but that needs to be ruled out too.

If it will give you a noise just when idling this will be easier. Engine off - spray some WD-40 on the belt grooves and the grooves on a pulley or two. If the noise is instantly gone and stays gone for even a run around the block you can either replace the belt again with one specifically made to be quiet or get in the habit of using some silicone grease on the belt and after a couple times it will stay quiet for quite a while and just redo that every now and then. I do it all the time to all belts.

Check that the belt has the right tension of course. These quiet belts do stretch more that the orig ones so it may reach the end of it's ability to stay within the adjustment range of the idler adjustment pulley. The WD-40 won't last that long but you probably have that for a test,
