Awful sound coming from brakes Sign In

I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire which has been a great first car! 3 weeks, ago, a mechanic friend totally replaced my rear brakes, and my front brakes were replaced in a shop in Aug, 2009. I have about 59,000 miles on it, and started with 30,000 when I bought it in 2006. For the last two weeks, I've been hearing this awful grinding, spinning/whriling noise (almost like a helicoptor rotor) whenever I brake at low speeds (20 mph or lower). Mechanic friend showed me brake pads/rotors & says that I have a good 6 mos before I will need work on my brakes. He attributes the sound to "normal brake sounds," but I'm not sure. Sounds like something is being dragged underneath my car when I slow down. Sound is not constant, but enough for me to be concerned. Would say it happens 6-7/10 times when I brake at low speeds. Any suggestions? Thanks!

sounds like the ABS may be activating. do you feel the buzzing in the pedal. does your abs light ever come on? those cars have trouble with the wiring to the abs speed sensors and sensor themselves. kid of hard to check without a scanner usually on a scanner you can see a sensor drop out at low speeds. just a thought but if that is what it is you can unplug a speed sensor and see if it quits. the noise should quit because the ABS will be inactive. but it can be a little dangerous to drive because the ABS module is releasing the brakes when that happens. as long as the ABS in inactive it will not do this.
