Any ideas as to why this happened to my starter? (pictures) Sign In

I just replaced the starter in my 02 3.2 Impala about 2 months ago, I just recently started having issues and noticed that the top connection ( the big wire) had become loose. Before I had a chance to bring it to my dads where I have tools at my disposal the car ceased to start at all and I realized that the entire stud had sheered off and there was no connection at all...forgive my lack of terminology here, I'm not a mechanic...here is a pic of the starter after I pulled it:

Any ideas as to why this could have become sheered off like that? As far as I know there are no moving parts down there. The starter was properly and tightly secured in its place. I will be taking it back tomorrow to have it replaced as I got the warranty on it but I am confused as to why this happened. Any advice or info would be much obliged...

The cap on the end of the solenoid is some type of phenolic material. Doesn't take too much for it to crack and become brittle with age and exposure to heat from the engine.
Usually things like that break off or crack when someone goes to remove or install the cable that connects to the stud. Another possibility is He Man had over torqued the nut for the cable and stressed out the housing mount doing a starter R&R for some reason. The nut for the bat cable requires 89 in/lbs. The smaller solenoid S terminal nut gets 20.5 in/lbs of torque.

It was me who put it in and I didn't realize that the nut had a certain torque required. I just tightened it down until it was nice and tight. should I use a torque wrench next time? that nut is kind of hard to reach...especially with a torque wrench but if thats what is causing the issue I will make it happen...

Nice and tight depends on who is putting it on. Takes quite of bit of experience before you can get the feel of how something tight is. Usually a seasoned mechanic or tech can tell how tight something should be or can feel how much a certain torque is.

Someone who doesn't do this on a daily basis assumes that tighter is better. They don't want things falling off, so they tend to over torque fasteners. If you can get a torque wrench in there, you could go that route. Or you could get the feel of how much 89 inch pounds really is and get close to doing it without using a torque wrench.
