Almost got my 94 towncar running quietly: remaining sounds Sign In

Ok, so on your excellent advice I've rid myself of most of the sounds on my car (1994 towncar, 178K miles). The engine runs, if not quietly, with a minimum of squeaks and so forth. There are two sounds left that I'd like to understand:

Firstly, when I hit the gas to go from zero to 1 mph, there is a high pitched ZUUUP sound. It's hard to describe, but it sounds electronic, and increases in pitch as it goes, and lasts about half a second if I hit the gas fast, and a full second if I press the pedal slow. This sound occurs at no other time, but usually (though not always) occurs when I accelerate out of a full stop. Any ideas?

Secondly, there is a rumble from the back that occurs while driving, seemingly at random, every couple of miles. It's interminent, so it may not occur for a week, then a few times one day. It lasts less than a second. I believe it started up just after I got a new tire and had my tires rotated.

Thanks again!

Noises can be funky to convey as you know. Perhaps a U-joint is causing both - hard to say. Kinda gotta take the driveshaft out (not hard but you aren't under the car yet) to be certain on those. Gotta ask - what type of rear brakes does this have- disc or drum? Just look thru the wheel - I don't recall which year they changed. It was close to 94,

Tom,

Thanks again. I will check the brakes and get back to you. So my father-in-law (who owned the car before me)said that he thinks the rumbling is because there's some kind of fancy stabilizers in the car that are old and not working well anymore. He thinks the rumbling is when the car hits a bump and the stabilizers are trying to adjust. There is also a low rumble that last about 30 seconds when the car starts coming from the front, and he thinks that's the front end stabilizers pumping up. Does that sound possible?

In other news, the car starting shifting oddly today. I noticed that when I slow down (not braking, just not accelerating and going on a flat or uphill) there is a slight jerk and deceleration around 38 miles per hour, and there is a slight jerk when accelerating in the 40s. I checked the automatic transmission fluid and it's fine (I did have the engine on and warm), so I thought I'd ask if there's anything else I should check, and whether I should get the transmission checked out, or if it's likely ok to drive with it. Thanks again!

Hi again,

the rumbling is probably the air ride pump (I was hoping this didn't have that) and the pump is hidden under some crap front left like under the washer reservoir I think. There's a switch in the truck to shut it down but don't or it will drag its butt like a cat in heat! If things screw up with that stuff we may need to get creative and do find a good bone yard as some of this stuff is pricey.

the shifty nifties. At about 40mph the car is deciding in its infinate wisdom to engage or give up on overdrive or what really is locking of the torque converter - don't make me explain that for now. If you travel a lot at 35-45 up and down just select the plain "D" for drive instead of the "OD" = overdrive - or does this have a separate switch for that - I think it's just the regular choice of drive in 94 - some Ford products put a button on the shifter - I just don't know how they did it with each car. The feature is trying to save you some gas but it's pointless if shifing in and out all the time so just disable it by the selection when driving those speeds. It clearly helps when driving over 50mph most of the time.

Checking out the trans: If fluid is properly filled and looks good just drive it. This car probably isn't worth going nuts on prevention attempts or a new trans and it's hard to say how long they last. I've only had one fail out of dozens - it's just one of those "luck of the draw" type things at some point in age and miles. These cars are at the perfect age that you can find another whole one if something gets too expensive.

Keep me/us posted as things come up,

T
