Advice for High Mileage Trips on a Regular Basis Sign In

Hey all -- Any advice you have would be amazing!
I have recently taken a job driving approximately 450 miles per night in my own vehicle.
I am considering 2 options - either buying a car specifically for the job or renting a car with unlimited mileage.

Buying a car I would most likely buy a Honda or some kind of 4 cylinder foreign car that I could run into the ground.
How often would I do oil changes? What would be things to check frequently for failure? How do fedex & ups service their vehicles?
Is the Lucus Oil Additive worth using or should I trust that the motor oil has the proper balance of additives?

Renting a vehicle would cost approximately $7200 per year..
Driving 140,000 per year do you think it will be cheaper to buy a car & have it fixed?

Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

as far as cost analysis you should make an Excel spreadsheet with all your expences so you can compare the options at hand.

as far as maintanence
use synthetic oil and you can get 5,000 miles between oil changes.
long highway trips arent hard on brakes, so assuming your brakes have plenty of life, you wont have to worry about them for a while.

if you buying used, before you make your trips perform some preventative work and replace the following.

Air filter
fuel filter (if theres a servicable one outside of the tank)
radiator hoses.
thermostat
fan belt
spark plugs
plug wires
change oil/filter
trans filter if equiped

then inspect the following
check power steering fluid
check coolant level and condition
check tires for tread life or unusual wear patterns
check tire pressure
check front and rear brakes
check front suspension
check all four shocks
check all exterior lights

Wow! This is way too interesting and 140k / year is the most ever of all the folks/customers I ever heard of!

Idea! Things depend on how you are compensated for transportation expenses but for this if you can keep a careful log of all expenses at what miles I'd be calling auto makers for a test new car in combination with oil and tire manufacturers to be the extreme example of the effects of their products and a real life test track of how the vehicle holds up.

I'm just about sure all cars are tested at least in controlled conditions to get estimates on the life of the components to come up with service interval recommendations. You know they pay for all that testing. If you are willing and things line up with a rigorous log kept and well documented you just might get a vehicle and the maintenance parts for free - perhaps even the fuel if you can get a company that want to claim theirs is better than others! I'd do some asking around.

UPS: I knew something about them once and I think it's still about so........ They service their own and are able to and ready to on a schedule renew their fleet mechanically on a schedule and have the ability to quickly restore whatever may happen with minimal down time while paying attention to the appearance of the vehicles as well for a good image!
