Abrupt and Intermittent power loss while driving for a few seconds in 2001 Civic Sign In

Hi all

My car sometimes loses throttle abruptly for a few seconds
while I am driving and then becomes normal. This has happened
7-8 times in the past 1 month or so with daily driving.
Currently I have a CEL code of P1456 (Aka EVAP Emission
Control fuel tank System Leak Detected). Don't know
if it is a coincidence. But all of these "power loses" have
occurred within the first 1 mile or so. The car does need an
oil change. Given its abrupt nature, what could the problem be ??

Something like this happened recently and we took it to the mechanic
who replace the TDC sensor for us. We did get a CEL the first time
which I kind of think was related to the ECM/PCM. Later we were
getting P1361 which typically indicates a a failing TDC sensor. Do
you think this problem is related ?

Thanks for all your help.

Are you still getting the P1361 code?

Was the mechanic able to duplicate the problem and catch the glitch from the cam sensor? Or did your mechanic just replace the sensor because there was a code for it and couldn't duplicate the symptom at the time?

Dear Discretesignals

Thanks for your interest in this case.A couple of clarifications

1) Currently I only have P1456 and I have never been able to get P1361 after the TDC sensor was replaced. I had P1361 which was always accompanied by the car car going into "limp mode" only before sensor replacement.

2) I remember atleast 1 time before the sensor replacement I have had the the car loose power for a few seconds w/o stopping / going into limp mode /without CEL.

3) The very first time the car stopped and went into limp mode I remember getting a CEL that was to do with the ECM/PCM. So in my mind I am not sure if the ECM/PCM is completely clean.

Hope this helps. I still have no clue

That one is going to be a challenge to figure out. You are faced with an automotive technician's worst nightmare (besides realizing you forgot to put oil in the engine after the customer's car comes back to the shop on the hook with a lock up engine).

The reason it is a nightmare is because there are many things that could cause that symptom and it is intermittent (I hate that word). To catch the glitch you have watch certain inputs and output to and from the computer that would cause a stalling situation and then somehow have the problem occur to catch it. Most of the time this requires a digital storage oscilloscope to monitor signals with because some glitches are too fast for meters or scanners to pick up.

Some things to monitor would be:
Crank sensor signal
TDC sensor signal
System and ignition voltage to computer
Coil control circuits
Injector control circuits

One of more of those things would usually go missing when the glitch occurs. That would give you an idea where to look to find the problem. If you could get the problem to occur all the time, it would be a whole lot easier to troubleshoot.

Another thing you could do is wiggle harnesses and connectors to see if you can duplicate the concern. Also inspect harness and connector for damage, looseness, contamination.

Thanks Discretesignals

It took me some bit of reading to comprehend what you have written. You can imagine if that is the case then it might be even more difficult for someone like me to implement this. It seems I might have to wait for more of the problem to come up. At this time I am prolly just going to go with oil change and may be try out a fuel system cleaner for P1456.

Is there a possibility that this intermittent problem and the CEL P1456 are related ? ( I think a "No" it was implicit in your answer, But getting it clarified is worth it)

I was reading about fuel pumps. Is it possible this is reflective of fuel pump going bad ?

Thanks

They shouldn't be related, but you never know. You could go ahead and troubleshoot the P1456 to see what is up with that. I highly doubt the fuel system cleaner will resolve the P1456 code. Something is wrong with the EVAP system and the trouble chart for that code needs to be followed.
